How HINs Are Assigned And Used In Healthcare Distribution

HINs play a critical role in ensuring timely and accurate delivery of medical products to their intended destinations.

Understanding HIN

The HIN (Health Industry Number) is a unique and standardized identifier that enumerates hospitals, providers, suppliers, and all other partners doing business in the supply chain. It is the method used by your trading partners for identifying locations of services and activities at your facilities, class of trade and for vendors & medical suppliers to use in electronic data interchange (EDI) when processing contract pricing, as well as for order tracking purposes. The HIN is location based; if there is an address change or ownership change, a new HIN is required.

+ How Do I Obtain A HIN?

HIN’s are requested on behalf of a healthcare facility or provider, by Distributor/GPO. HIBCC confirms the facility name, location, and class of trade by contacting the healthcare facility or provider via a phone call. This can only be done via phone verification by HIBCC.

+ Who Is HIBCC?

HIBCC is a non-profit standards organization. HIBCC assigns and maintains the HIN (Health Industry Number) numbers for the entire healthcare industry. You can visit their website at hibcc.org or reach them via phone at 602-381-1091.

+ How Can I Get Started?

Providers or healthcare facilities will need to share their DBA name or legal entity name, the address is their physical place of business, provide the contact name, title and phone number for the specific location that we can provide to HIBCC.

When HIBCC calls the facility or provider, that person will need to confirm the facility name, location and class of trade of the business. Once HIBCC can verify the facility, the HIN will be assigned at no charge to you. HIBCC will only make 3 attempt to reach the facility.

+ Do HINs Expire?

HINs do not expire. They could be deactivated when a facility closes or moves locations.

+ Can A Facility Have Multiple / Duplicate HINs?

A facility can have multiple HIN’s attached to different providers or different suites within a location. HIBCC does not assign true duplicates and each provider should have a unique HIN.

+ How Quickly Can A New HIN Be Assigned?

Once a request for a new HIN is initiated, it is added to the HIBCC queue. If a licensee has a more urgent request they can submit a request to HIBCC to expedite and will typically get an initial response within 3-5 business days.
