HIDA Acute Care Market Pulse™ Shows

Five Consecutive Quarters of Expansion

Alexandria, Va. – U.S. medical product demand in the acute care market continues to expand for the fifth consecutive quarter, according to the HIDA Market Pulse™ surgical volume-weighted utilization index. A positive index of 12.9 indicated slight expansion in demand during Q3 2016. Demand declined from the moderate expansion seen in the previous quarter. Growth during Q3 was driven by national increases in emergency room volume, surgical volume, and outpatient procedures.

“While the market continues to expand, growth has slowed due to lower admissions,” said Justin Waters, Research and Analytics Manager, HIDA. Larger facilities tend to fare better overall, Waters observed, but saw a 20-point index drop between the second and third quarter.

HIDA’s acute care index is derived from a quarterly real-time survey of more than 120 hospital CFOs and directors of materials management and purchasing, identifying crucial factors that affect demand. Positive index readings indicate slight, moderate, or extreme market expansion, while negative readings show contraction. For more information, visit www.HIDA.org/MarketPulse.
