Career Advice
The best career advice I've ever received was something called the do-say ratio: Do what you say you're going to do. The higher that number is, that's the best do-say ratio. And that will help you throughout your career.
Career Challenges
I had a couple challenges throughout my career. The first was when I left military service to join the commercial workforce and really understanding how to overcome it was understanding how commercial was different than the military, the strict military structure.
Second one was when I left the high tech sector and then moved into medical devices and really the way I overcame that one was to listen, learn and observe before I made any new initiatives or try to make any changes.
Work-Life Balance
If I could go back to the start of my career, the one thing I would do differently is improve my work-life balance. Early in my career and throughout my career, work was always the priority versus the family. But while you typically go through 5 or 6 companies throughout your career, you only have one family. So really improving that work life balance is something that's really, really important.
Essential Industry Skills
In the next 5-10 years, the most important skills needed in healthcare and distribution is learning how to be a true partner to your customer. It's very important given all the challenges that they have. If you can accomplish that and really be a true partner consultant, you will do very well.
