HHS Accessible Medical Equipment Compliance Deadline July 8, 2026

The July 2026 HHS deadline creates a near-term sales opportunity for compliant exam tables and scales.

By July 8, most healthcare providers are required to have at least one accessible exam table and scale in their office under a 2024 rule from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights. The rule adopted U.S. Access Board’s MDE Standards and is designed to help reduce barriers patients with disabilities may face when accessing healthcare services.

What You and Your Healthcare Customers Need to Know

Covered providers that use examination tables and weight scales must have at least one accessible exam table and one accessible weight scale available for patient use.

Patient accessibility

In addition:

  • Healthcare providers that purchased, leased, rented, or otherwise acquired medical diagnostic equipment after July 8, 2024, were required to obtain equipment that meets accessibility standards until they reach the required number of accessible units.
  • General medical practices must ensure that 10% of each type of medical diagnostic equipment (or at least one unit) is accessible.
  • Facilities specializing in mobility-related conditions, such as rehabilitation or physical therapy centers, must ensure 20% of equipment (or at least one unit) is accessible.
  • Larger healthcare systems should distribute accessible equipment appropriately across departments, clinics, and specialties to ensure meaningful access for patients.

Opportunity for Distributors and Manufacturers

The July 8 compliance deadline gives distributors and manufacturers an opportunity to help providers address last-minute equipment gaps. Distributors can help customers identify compliant solutions and validate purchase needs, while manufacturers of accessible medical diagnostic equipment may see increased demand from healthcare organizations finalizing accessibility-related investments.
