Navigating The Lab Workforce Challenges
The U.S. is experiencing a shortage in medical lab workers. Laboratory technologists were the second most in-demand allied health professionals in 2021. The U.S. faced a shortage of roughly 20,000 to 25,000 medical laboratory professionals in 2022, and demand for clinical lab technologists will rise to 19% by 2030.
The Future Of Testing At Home
Consumer attitudes towards home testing shifted during the pandemic, as Americans would test themselves using at-home rapid antigen tests. The role of self-testing will continue to evolve. By 2027, the U.S. home testing market is projected to reach $11 billion.
Innovation And Patient Outcomes
Technological advances can result in increased efficiency, reduction in errors, and improved quality in the delivery of health care services. The point-of-care diagnostics market is expected to grow 5.1 percent a year for the next seven years, reaching an expected market size of $43.1 billion by 2030.
Congressional Intervention To Prevent Lab Cuts
Lab services faced a potential cut of 15% in Medicare reimbursement, until Congress delayed these cuts in December 2022. A permanent fix is envisioned by the bipartisan Saving Access to Laboratory Services Act (SALSA) – which is currently pending in Congress.
