More than 65 percent of surveyed doctors indicated they anticipate their supply purchases will go up in the coming year. Meanwhile, less than half (about 47%) of physicians said they plan expand spending on capital equipment.
These trends may reflect the more cyclical nature of physician spending on capital expenditures versus the necessary supplies doctors need each year for their practices, which can be affected by growth.
These findings and more are presented in HIDA's 2008 Physician Spend Survey, which also contains data on:
Spending by practice type
- Variability by practice size
- Different purchasing patterns among single-specialty and multi-specialty practices
- Health information technology spending and its impact
Researchers surveyed more than 400 physician practices for the report, which offers analytical insights and key charts and graphics that can be used to inform decision makers and others.
