HIBCC
The Health Industry Business Communications Council (HIBCC) was founded by major industry associations, including HIDA, in 1983 to create identification standards for products in the health care supply chain. HIBCC Standards are accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). HIBCC Standards are globally deployed and are a predominate device standard.
HIBCC supports the FDA initiative to create a Unique Device Identifier (UDI) and has recommended that existing Universal Product Number (UPN) standards be adopted because doing so will both minimize industry deployment costs and avoid the inherent risks associated with forcing labelers to abandon or cross reference their existing product identifiers.
