White House Announces $1.2 Billion for EMR Grants
Today Vice President Joe Biden and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will announce the application process for $1.2 billion in grants to help hospitals transition to electronic medical records. The funding will come from the $787 billion economic stimulus plan, approved by the White House in February 2009. The $1.2 billion in grants;

Include $598 million to establish 70 Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers to aid hospitals and clinicians

Include $564 million to help hospitals share patients' information with each other

Will become available on October 1, 2009 at the start of the new federal fiscal year
